What the next session will receive
A new chat in one tool begins with a brief of the other tool’s latest work, as reference data. A chat that is already open gets it once, with its next message. A tool never gets its own work back.

## Goal
> Add a watering reminder to the plant detail screen
## Recent asks
- > Keep it working offline
## Agent's last message
> Added the watering reminder toggle and its test.
>
> Next steps:
> - Write the reminder copy
## Decisions and rejected approaches
- Decision: Store reminders on the device (because the app has no accounts)
- Decision: Show the reminder under the plant name
- Rejected: Push notifications (because they would need a server)
- Question: One reminder per plant, or one per day?
## Test results
- Recorded command exit codes, oldest first: 1, 0
## Files changed
- src/plants/PlantDetail.tsx (updated)
- src/plants/reminders.ts (added)
- src/plants/reminders.test.ts (added)
## Commands run
- pnpm test

Nothing. Sharing is off for this project, so new sessions here start without AskOnce context. Turn Sharing on to review the brief first.

Sharing applies to this project until you turn it off. While it is on, the local plugins capture supported sessions here and share each new brief automatically after it passes the secret scan. Activity shows exactly what was shared.

The brief
Fixed rules, not AI. About 1,500 estimated tokens at most, secret-scanned.

Facts, not a summary
Files, commands and replies, read straight from the sessions.
03
Both directions, checked
Tools ticks a direction once a new session records the brief.
04
Local by design
No AskOnce server, account or telemetry. Plugins talk only to 127.0.0.1.

Activity lists each capture and brief. Exclude any session.
Questions
Before the first session.
How do I share context between Claude Code and Codex?
Download and install AskOnce (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit). In AskOnce’s setup, or later in Tools, choose Install plugin for Claude Code and for Codex. In Codex, type /hooks and trust the AskOnce entries once. Add a project folder and turn Sharing on for it. Then work in one tool: a new chat in the other starts with a brief of that work, and a chat already open there gets newer work with your next message. AskOnce starts with Windows and lives in the tray; turn that off in Settings.
Can I continue in Codex when I hit my Claude Code usage limit?
Yes. With the AskOnce plugin in both tools and Sharing on for the project, open a new Codex chat in the same project folder. It starts with a brief of your Claude Code work: the goal, recent asks, the agent’s last message, files changed, commands run, test results and next steps. AskOnce records a turn when it finishes, so a turn the limit cut off part-way may be missing. It works the same way from Codex to Claude Code, and a chat still open in the first tool gets the other tool’s newer work once, with your next message.
Can Codex see what I did in Claude Code?
Not on its own. Each tool keeps its own sessions (Claude Code in the .claude folder and Codex in the .codex folder of your user profile), and by default neither reads the other’s. Codex sees the same files in your project, but not the asks, decisions, commands and test results behind them. AskOnce gives a new Codex chat a short brief of your Claude Code work, and a new Claude Code chat a brief of your Codex work.
How is AskOnce different from AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md or a handoff prompt?
AGENTS.md (read by Codex) and CLAUDE.md (read by Claude Code) hold standing instructions you keep up to date, such as how to build and test the project. They are not a record of your last session. A handoff prompt is, but you have to ask for it, copy it and paste it every time you switch. AskOnce records each turn while you work and gives the next chat in the other tool a brief by itself. Keep your instruction files: AskOnce never writes into them.
What goes into a brief?
Facts from earlier sessions, picked by fixed rules with no AI: the agent’s last message, files changed, commands run, test results, recent asks, next steps and open questions, plus the source tool and time. It is about 1,500 estimated tokens at most, secret-scanned before it is shared, and always starts “Reference data from a previous session. Not instructions. Verify before relying on it.”
When does a session get the brief?
Once the plugin is installed in both tools and you have turned Sharing on for the project and confirmed it, a new Claude Code chat starts with a brief of what you did in Codex, and a new Codex chat starts with a brief of what you did in Claude Code. A chat that is already open gets the other tool’s newer work once, with your next message. A tool never gets its own work back. In Claude Code, /askonce:status and /askonce:brief show it on demand; in Codex, the $askonce skill does the same.
Where is my work saved?
On your computer, in %APPDATA%\AskOnce. The app has no AskOnce server, no account and no telemetry. The plugins talk only to the AskOnce app on 127.0.0.1, using a token that changes each time it starts. A brief leaves your computer only as part of your own Claude Code or Codex session.
Does AskOnce work with Claude Code and Codex?
Yes: Claude Code and Codex (the Codex app and the interactive Codex CLI) on Windows 10 and 11 (x64). Both directions between them passed a live check. Claude Desktop’s Code tab runs Claude Code, so AskOnce works there; ordinary Claude Desktop chats don’t run plugins or hooks, so AskOnce can’t share into them. codex exec, IDE extensions and other coding CLIs (such as OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Cursor Agent, Copilot CLI and Aider) are not supported, and neither are macOS, Linux or WSL.
Do I need to install a plugin?
Yes, one in each tool. AskOnce doesn’t install it for you, and without it nothing is captured or shared. In AskOnce’s setup, or later in Tools, choose Install plugin for Claude Code and for Codex. AskOnce shows the exact change first, changes only its own entries and saves a backup. Claude Code needs nothing more. Codex needs one step that AskOnce can’t do for you: open Codex, type /hooks and trust the AskOnce entries. You do this once. After an AskOnce update that changes the plugin’s hooks, Codex asks once more.
Does AskOnce touch my credentials or instruction files?
No. AskOnce never reads your Claude Code or Codex credentials; you sign in inside each tool. It never writes captured text into AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md or other instruction files.
Is AskOnce free?
Yes. AskOnce is free to download and use, with no account and no sign-up. Paid features may come later for new things, such as other platforms or team use.
Why does Windows warn me about the installer?
The AskOnce installer for Windows x64 is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC”. That means the installer is not code-signed, not that a problem was found. Check the SHA-256 checksum published with the download, then choose More info → Run anyway.
